Michael Kors quite literally turned New York into a concrete jungle.
At the venue of his Michael Kors Collection spring 2023 show, just steps off the West Side Highway and the Hudson River, Kors created a mirrored labyrinthian runway with walls of tropical trees and shrubbery like palms, banana, figs, and ferns. The green foliage, reflective surfaces and the bare concrete floor all evoked an atmosphere of what the designer called an “urban resort”.
What does urban resort mean in terms of the fashion? Just as a string band started playing subdued versions of Killing Me Softly and La Isla Bonita, the models sauntered in clothes that were classic Michael Kors: sexy, glamorous and ultra luxe. The opening look was a white relaxed tailored jacket that was bare underneath paired with a matching skirt with a slit slashed up the front. This was followed by a black version of the jacket worn with a bandeau and a sarong wrapped skirt. “Big city polish juxtaposed with relaxed resort glamour,” described Kors.
It was a collection that celebrated the body with sleek jersey dresses that hugged a woman’s shape, shirts unbuttoned to the navel, skirts that ended in a curtain of fringe, sheer caftans with oversized floral prints, swimsuits with sexy cutouts, suiting rendered with a sensuous hand, plus knitwear and jackets that left the shoulders bare. Some dresses were accentuated with a big shiny buckle that has become a Michael Kors signature. The colors ranged from black and white plus lime, poppy and turquoise in between.
There were men’s looks too including a tone-on-tone dune colored sleeveless blazer worn with a tank top and trousers, a sheer black djellaba paired with linen trousers, and a luxe poppy colored chesterfield coat over a black silk shirt and white trousers.
The show closed with Kors reliable staples of sequined dresses and gowns like the little black number sported by Bella Haddid that was gathered in the navel area and a floor-length lipstick red version that was ripe for a glamorous night out in the city or in just as glamorous a resort somewhere.
Michael Kors did Michael Kors what does best and it was a beautiful, solid collection.
