Known for drumming his way to fame with the band Blink-182, if anyone knows sore muscles, it’s Travis Barker. “After boxing for years, training Muay Thai, playing drums and training for tours, recovery became a big issue for me,” Barker tells Forbes. With a gruelling schedule taking a toll on his body, the drummer turned to cannabinoids for relief.
But seeking pain relief from CBD was just one part of a larger lifestyle shift that occurred after a near-death experience in 2008. On the night of September 19, the drummer was taking off in a small plane from South Carolina to Van Nuys, California, when one of the tires blew out and the plane crashed next to the South Carolina Highway 302. Four of the six people died in the crash, the only survivors being Travis Barker and disc jockey Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein, who were critically injured. With burns on sixty-five percent of his body, Barker was hospitalized for eleven weeks and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder following the accident.
“The plane crash forced me to change my lifestyle completely,” Barker tells Forbes. “I’m very focused on my physical and mental health as well as treating my body with the respect it deserves.” Prior to the accident, Barker says his devotion to work caused him to overlook his health, “I was on the go 24/7 and there were no opportunities to step back and put the lens on my well-being.” 14 years since the accident, and Barker now leads a completely different lifestyle, “Living a healthy lifestyle is everything to me,” says Barker. “I couldn’t do what I do without taking care of myself and giving what my body needs to keep going.”
Early on in Barker’s lifestyle change, he discovered cannabinoids (CBD). “I was using so many different types of CBD products and different lines of CBD,” the founder says. “It became something I was really passionate about so I wanted to create my own line.” Now he’s sharing his passion for CBD with Barker Wellness, a line of THC-free, cannabinoid-infused products. “Cannabinoids can be used for many different wellness benefits,” Barker says. “The Barker Wellness brand is all about nurturing your whole body—your mind and physical body.” The holistic approach is why the line features a diverse range of products—from pain relief creams to CBD tinctures for different purposes like maintenance and sleep.
While there are no shortage of CBD products to choose from these days, what sets Barker Wellness apart is their use of lesser-known, non-psychoactive cannabinoids like Cannabichromene (CBC) and Cannabigerol (CBG). “There are several types of cannabinoids and they have varying benefits,” explains Barker. “We’ve chosen specific cannabinoid properties for the Barker Wellness products based on their purpose—pain relief and recovery, for example.”
According to Barker Wellness, CBC acts as an alternative to traditional painkillers but without the harmful side effects, making it a useful anti-inflammatory, while CBG has been found to increase dopamine levels which help to regulate sleep, mood and appetite. After the THC is removed, these remaining cannabinoid components are blended with healing herbs to target specific needs.
An example of a unique blend designed for a particular use is one of Barker’s newer products—the Barker Wellness Bath Soak, which launched last month. The star ingredient is broad spectrum hemp oil extract, from which the THC has been removed resulting in a highly concentrated 15mg dose of cannabinoid oil. “In the Bath Soak we use a combination of CBD and CBC with the essential oils and skin moisturizers to make the formula really effective,” says Barker. The essential oils Barker is referring to? Lavender, bergamot and hibiscus—three scents known for encouraging relaxation. The blend also includes moisturizing and anti-inflammatory vitamin E, copaiba oil and daikon seed extract.
“Whether you’re trying to unwind, relieve muscle tension or nourish your skin—the Bath Soak has multiple benefits for the skin, body and mind,” explains Barker. The idea for the product came from the drummer’s frequent use of bath soaks in his down time. “I love taking baths,” Barker tells Forbes. “It’s such an amazing way to unwind, especially after a long day.
It’s this drawing inspiration from Barker’s daily routine that shapes not only the products, but the brand’s ethos. As a dedicated vegan, Barker has prioritized ethical production that minimizes harm to the planet. “Making the Barker Wellness brand vegan and cruelty-free made sense because it’s in line with my values,” the founder tells Forbes.
Barker’s plant-based diet also serves as the inspiration for his latest addition to the line—CBD gummies. “I wanted to create a new product that was delicious, convenient and easy to add into your routine,” explains Barker. “Gummies are a great introduction for people who are new to CBD.” The organic edibles come in three flavors, each designed for a different function. The ‘Recovery’ gummies blend CBD and CBC with Vitamins C, D3 and B1 to reduce stress and support the immune system while the ‘Sleep’ gummies contain chamomile for encouraging relaxation and melatonin-rich wolfberry extract to help you fall and stay asleep.
Barker’s personal favorite? The ‘Maintenance’ gummies, a formula that combines CBD and CBG with lion’s mane mushroom and gingko biloba—two ingredients believed to improve focus and brain function. While we can imagine Barker needs his focus on stage, the real reason these are his go-to have more to do with their taste. “The flavors are inspired by foods that I love,” Barker tells Forbes. “I’m a huge fan of matcha so the Organic Maintenance Gummies are definitely my favorite flavor right now.”
