The average price of regular unleaded gas fell another two cents since yesterday, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). That brings it to $4.60 per gallon, 41 cents lower than it was at its peak a month ago.
That’s still too high for many travelers. Pain at the pump has led a big chunk of Americans to rethink their summer vacation plans. More than four in 10 (44%) travelers say they are reducing the number of trips they are taking, and a similar percentage is shifting to destinations closer to home, according the latest survey from the Longwoods International tracking study.
At the same time, travelers’ overall satisfaction with hotels has dropped compared to last year, according to J.D. Power’s North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index (NAGSI) Study. The single biggest factor driving this year’s eight-point decline in overall satisfaction is higher prices and fees.
It makes perfect sense, then, that many savvy hotels are wooing summer road trippers with a perk everyone can use: free gas cards, typically doled out at the check-in desk when you’ve booked a couple of nights or more.
