Airstream, the legendary company that created the silver bullet travel trailer, has partnered with REI Co-op, the outdoor gear and lifestyle company, to introduce the REI Co-op Special Edition Basecamp Travel Trailer. It’s a marriage of two outdoor companies that seemed inevitable.
Built on a 16-foot Airstream Basecamp model base, the new Airstream travel trailer can be towed by an SUV or a small truck. It’s multifunctional, ideal for weekend trips as well as extended road trips, thanks to a full kitchen, bathroom, sleeping quarters and ingenious storage hacks.
As for the interior color, all you have to do is recall your last trip to an REI store. Those various shades of green found in the retail stores are incorporated into the design, from seating fabric to kitchen mesh nets.
The REI Co-op Special Edition has a convertible dinette and lounge that converts to a 76-inch x 76-inch full bed that can comfortably sleep two adults.
The trailer comes with a 25-piece REI Co-op product kit, which includes REI Co-op brand and partner products to make outdoor living easier. It includes two Flexlite Camp Dreamer Chairs, a Campwell picnic table and bench covers, kitchen utensils from OXO, towels, mugs, a rechargeable lantern, various sizes of Pack-Away Cubes, and a Camp Roll Table.
Where do you keep all this gear, plus everything else you want to bring along? Well, the trailer has some smartly designed places to stash everything. That includes a large storage cabinet under the curbside bench, two overhead storage racks, and an L-track system on the floor and wall for holding bags and other gear out of the way. The L-track system makes it possible to secure up to two bike mounts. There’s a lockable storage compartment includes a USB charging port and a cable pass-through.
The kitchen area has a round stainless steel sink and an Epicurean sink cover that doubles as a cutting board. The Vigo graphite black sink faucet taps potable water from a 21-gallon onboard tank for cleaning dishes. There’s also a UV-LED Smart Drinking Faucet. The two-burner stovetop is powered with liquid propane (LP).
One of the hallmarks of the REI Co-op Special Edition is that it features environmentally-friendly design choices. They include fabrics and laminates made from post-consumer recycled materials a cutting board sink cover made from recycled paper, and cabinetry crafted from lightweight and sustainably grown wood.
The wet bath is located in the center of the floor plan, housing the shower and toilet in the same waterproof area. For those who want to go greener, there’s an option to choose a composting toilet. The shower head pass-through port is for rinsing gear off outside or taking a shower outside, reducing the water in the holding tank. One of the best features is a recirculating water heater, which delivers instant hot water to the shower and kitchen sink, eliminating warm-up time and conserving water. Opt for the solar upgrade, which includes 360 watts of flexible rooftop solar panels and a 200Ah battery bank.
“We’re honored to partner with REI on this special edition Basecamp travel trailer, an example of the efforts we’re taking to help reduce the carbon footprint of travel across the world in an Airstream,” said Airstream president and CEO Bob Wheeler. “This one-of-a-kind Basecamp travel trailer has helped us explore more sustainable manufacturing practices and materials as we work to prioritize caring for the environment.”
The REI Co-op Special Edition Basecamp Travel Trailer is available from authorized Airstream dealerships with pricing starting at $52,900.
